What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a substitute tooth root that serves the same function as the root of a natural tooth. The implant provides a stable foundation that preserves the bone to provide a tooth replacement that looks, feels and functions as a natural tooth.

Are dental implants a better solution than bridges, partials and dentures?

Dental implants provide a more permanent tooth replacement option than the alternative options such as bridges, partials and dentures. Unlike bridges, partials and dentures need to be replaced several times over the patient’s lifetime, while dental implants can last a lifetime. In addition, implants are designed to preserve the existing bone near the missing tooth without damaging surrounding teeth which is not always the case with the alternative tooth replacement solutions.

Will the implant(s) look like my natural teeth?

The simple answer is, Yes! Implants address both the root replacement to preserve the natural contour of your mouth; as well as the exterior crown for natural look, feel and function.

How long does it take to complete treatment?

Commonly the procedure is no longer than other standard dental procedures. However, the overall treatment time can take anywhere from several weeks to months based upon the individual’s healing time and bone quality. After the initial procedure is complete you will have a few follow up visits to monitor the progression of the implant before completing the final phase of crown placement.

Is implant surgery painful?

Most patients experience similar minor discomfort after surgery that is commonly associated with other dental procedures such as tooth extractions, fillings, etc. The majority of dental implant patients can manage any post-surgery discomfort with over the counter pain medication.

How long do dental implants last?

According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry dental implants are the best long-term solution for tooth replacement. When properly placed, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Can my implant fail?

From 1975 to 2004, Implant success ranged between 90% to 100% according to a clinical study. The most common causes for implant failure range from smoking to excessive grinding of the teeth.
