A dental crown is a cosmetic restoration used to improve the shape of the tooth or to strengthen the tooth. The process involves applying a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth in order to cover and restore its shape, size and strength. The dental crowns are cemented into place and will fully encase the entire visible portion of the tooth that lies at and above the gum line. These crowns are often used for teeth that have been broken, partially destroyed, worn down or have tooth decay.
Porcelain crowns are generally preferred as they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and tend to be very strong.
Metal crowns typically include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium), or a base-metal alloy (for example, chromium or nickel). With metal crowns there is less tooth structure that is removed and tooth wear on opposing teeth is minimum when compared to other crown types.
Temporary crowns consist of acrylic or stainless steel and are typically used as a temporary restoration while a more permanent crown is created in a dental laboratory. At Regency Court Dentistry, we offer temporary crowns for emergency dental care needs in cases of a dental accident or trauma situation.
